26 April 1945 - The Tipton Advertiser

Again the Angel of Death has claimed one of our number. From the home where but fifteen days ago He had called our beloved Isabel during the early evening of April 18, 1945, James Henry Yule, 83, was called to his reward.

James, the second child of Alexander and Letitia Mars Martin Yule, was born Dec. 3, 1861 in the parental home in Red Oak township, Cedar county, Iowa. He had been in frail health for several years, but for a few days prior to his last illness he seemed to be very much improved. He enjoyed visiting with friends, his repartee so like is old self. Suddenly, during the morning of April 18th, he was stricken; medical aid gave no relief and without regaining consciousness, he passed away that evening.

James attended the rural school, the Clarence high school and the Presbyterian College at Hopkinton, Iowa. He was a member of the Red Oak Grove Presbyterian church.

As a young man, with his farming, he was also interested in bee culture and kept a large apiary. No one locally knew better than he the habits and haunts of our wild life, both plant and animal. Many pleasant hours were spent with dog and gun in field and wood. He was an excellent shot and any marauder within range met with misfortune.

On August 2, 1898 Mr. Yule married Miss Elizabeth Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elias Williams of Red Oak Grove. At their home in Tipton in Feb. 1901, was born their daughter, Clella V. Elizabeth. On March 1, 1901, Mr. Yule lost his wife by death. The infant, deprived of a mother's love, was tenderly cared for by Mr. Yule's sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Dorcas and later, in her grandfather Yule's home, by her aunts, Anna and Isabel. A lovely and lovable child, she was a joy to all for a few short years, until on Nov. 22, 1905, she joined her mother gone before.

Mrs. Alexander Yule having died in 1892 and a son, John Alexander in 1867, the family circle was now Mr. Yule and his three children, Anna, James and Isabel. In 1912 Mr. Yule died, in 1934, Anna died; on April 3, 1945, Isabel and on April 18, 1945, James. Left to mourn are a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Dorcas of Stanwood, her children, Homer of Tipton and Mrs. Edna Gardner, of Stanwood with their families; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smith in the home who comforted and cared for James since the death of Isabel; numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

With the passing of James Yule the farm home which his father established 93 years ago, is for the first time without a Yule resident.

The Yule family has become almost a tradition. Their fine fellowship, their hospitality, their successful farm methods, their support of all worthy projects, the church and cemetery association, the schools, the needy, the Red Oak Grove Park, and others--will not soon be forgotten in the community.

Funeral services were conducted April 21, 1945 at Red Oak Grove Presbyterian church, the Rev. Louis P. Penningroth and Rev. LaVern Justis officiating. Interment was in Red Oak Grove cemetery. James Yule, a pioneer has left us, but his spirit lingers near.
