19 February 1909 - The Lowden News

Mary Alice Caldwell was born here at Lowden, on March 11th, 1862, and she died at her home near Norwalk, Iowa, Thursday evening, February 11th, 1909, at 6:30 o'clock. Age forty-six years and eleven months.

Deceased was married on February 21st, 1884, at Clarence, Iowa, to Walter Waite, her now sorrowing widower, who with their five children, Nina, Charlie, Willie, Hazel and Alice, survive, as do also her parents, four brothers and one sister of the deceased, namely, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Caldwell and children, Mrs. W. H. Cole, Charles, Herbert, Arch and Chester Caldwell, to mourn the sad loss of their loved one. All the relatives named, except baby Alice, were here Monday attending the funeral, as were also W. H. Cole, Mrs. Chas. Caldwell and daughter, Miss Bessie, and Mrs. Herb Caldwell and son, and a number of other relatives, and many friends and neighbors.

The funeral of Mrs. Waite had been announced to be held Sunday afternoon, but on account of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Cole, who reside at Lexington, Neb.; could not get here in time, the funeral was postponed, it was held here Monday afternoon, with services in the M. E. church and interment in the Lowden cemetery. Rev. C. E. Baker of Low Moor and the local pastor, Rev. A. M. Jayne conducted the solemn services, which were most impressive. Quite a number of beautiful and costly floral pieces adorned the casket.

Mrs. Waite was raised here and before her marriage taught school in this vicinity. She taught a school year and six months up to Feb. 8th, 1884, in the Lowden public school. For many years now she has resided with her husband and children at quite a distance away from here. This faithful loving wife and mother died at the very hour, that her youngest baby, Alice, first saw the light of this world. All sympathize deeply with the bereaved family.
