15 November 1945 - The Tipton Advertiser

Luther Thumm, 41 year old Cedar county farmer residing about six miles north of Tipton, was killed on highway 38 about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in an accident involving the tractor and wagon he was pulling, and an automobile driven by Atty. J. C. France of Tipton. Mr. Thumm was born in West Virginia, June 10th, 1904, and is survived by his wife, four sons, the oldest about 12 years, and one sister, Mrs. Clarence Hill of Clarence community.

According to reports of the fatal accident by those first on the scene Mr. Thumm was enroute to his home driving his tractor, behind which he had hitched a wagon load of cobs. The France car struck the wagon at the rear driving it onto the tractor and impaling Thumm on the tractor steering apparatus. It has been reported that there was no tail light on the wagon, also that approaching car headlights blinded Mr. France for a moment just before the collision with the load of cobs.

The McCormick funeral home took charge of the body. Funeral services have been tentatively set for two o'clock Friday in the McCormick funeral home, with burial in the Masonic cemetery.

Attorney France, his sister, Miss Margaret France, and his granddaughter Mary Jean France, 10, who were riding in the automobile, were injured. Mr. France and Margaret suffered from cuts, bruises and shock while the granddaughter suffered a broken nose, as well as cuts and bruises. She was taken to St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids, for examination and treatment. Mr. France and his sister were able to return to their homes here.
