Charles L. Smith, son of William and Emma Smith was born at Troy, Iowa in Davis county on April 10, 1860 and died at Clinton, Iowa, July 23, 1945. Funeral services were conducted from the home of his son, E. E. Smith on Thursday, July 26, at 2:00 p.m., with the Rev. A. W. Straub officiating. Interment was in the Lime City cemetery.

At the age of 19 he came to Cedar county. He married Emma I. Starrett, March 1, 1862 in Sugar Creek township. To this union were born three daughters and four sons. They farmed in Cedar county the greater part of their lives. His wife, Emma passed away on April 23, 1923. He continued farming several years thereafter. Later he married Nora Whitbeck. They retired to Wilton where they lived several years after which they moved to Davenport where he spent his last years.

Besides his children, he is survived by his wife Nora, and two step-sons. Also two brothers, Arthur of Twin Valley and Millard of Ada, Minn. and one sister, Lily Eddings of Clarkston, Wash. There are 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Vearl Ayres, Roy Ayres, Harry King, Earl Smith, Clifford Denkman and Everett Rorick. Flower attendants were Mrs. Rose Grunder and Mrs. Catherine Herr.
