Mechanicsville - Walter Jack, a longtime resident of this community, died at his farm home Friday. He had been failing in health but his death was unexpected.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 10 at 2:30 p.m. in the Horner Funeral home with Rev. Beaty McDonald officiating.

Walter Thomas Jack was born the son of John and Margaret Forsythe Jack on November 3 in Des Moines. His youth was spent in the West Branch community where he graduated from high school and taught in a country school.

Mr. Jack was married to Amber Jane Pickert at Lisbon on January 29, 1917. They have been engaged in farming since that time southwest of Mechanicsville.

He had a great interest in Botany and during his spare time he classified all the flowers and plants native to this locality.

Mr. Jack was also interested in writing and wrote numerous articles for papers and magazines. He had a book published in 1946, "The Furrow and Us", and had just recently completed a historical novel.

He is survived by his widow, a son, Edward Jack, Mechanicsville; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Helen) Ryerson, Rock Island, Ill.; and a foster daughter, Mrs. William (Nancy) Yazel, Kansas City, Mo.

Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Mae Hemingway, West Branch, six grandchildren and one great granddaughter, a nephew and several nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

George Brown, Donald Puffer, James High, David Ferguson, Leonard Longerbeam and William Hass, Jr. were the pallbearers. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
