Mechanicsville - Funeral services were held for Paul Thomas, 72, in the First Presbyterian church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday with Pastor George Gallaher officiating. Masonic and military rites were conducted.

Mr. Thomas died in St. Luke's hospital, March 4, following an illness of two years.

Jonathan Paul Thomas was born Sept. 24, 1893, the son of William W. and Fannie H. Thomas. He attended the Mechanicsville school and graduated in 1914. He was married on June 26, 1920 to Esther Frances Augell in Sterling, Ill. They farmed east of Mechanicsville until retiring and moving to town a few years ago.

He entered the army on Sept. 21, 1917 and served overseas. Mr. Thomas was a member of the First Presbyterian church, a 50 year member of the Patmos Lodge, No. 155 AF and AM. He took his 32nd degree in Iowa Consistory, Cedar Rapids and was a District lecturer and Masonic instructor. He belonged to the American Legion and was a Past Patron of the Evangeline chapter, Order of Eastern Star.

Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Frances, a patient at the Crestview Nursing home, Marion; three daughters, Bettie C. Thomas, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. George (Dorothy) Auld, Albert Lea, Minn., and Mrs. Ray (Marilyn) Jewell, Mechanicsville.

Also surviving is a brother, Merrill H. Thomas and grandsons, Pvt. David Auld, Fort Bragg, N.C. and Thomas and James Jewell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.

Pallbearers were G. E. McAfee, J. C. Butler, Merle Clifton, Everett Ferguson, Alvin Davidson and Hugh Lamont. Burial in Rose Hill cemetery with Horner Funeral home in charge.
