23 April 1909 - The Lowden News

Carl Hilscher was born near Genesen, Province Posen, Prussia, on Sept. 28th, 1843. He was married to Henrietta Auguste Schultz, his now sorrowing widow, on Oct. 5th, 1879. They came to America and direct to Lowden in May 1881. Here they soon bought a home, in which they have resided ever since. Mr. Hilscher had not been feeling very well nearly all winter, and for the past month he has been quite sick with la-grippe. Last Sunday his sickness took worse form; other complications of ailments took ahold violently, and soon brought the end. He died at his home here Wednesday, April 21st, at 2:30 a.m.

There survive to mourn Mr. Hilscher's demise his widow, one son, five daughters, two sons-in-law and three grandchildren.

Deceased was a member of Germania lodge No. 15 M.B.A. in this order he carried $2000 life insurance in favor of his widow. Mr. Hilscher was also a prominent member in the Lowden Krieger Verein, being one of the organizers of that society, he has always taken an active interest in public matters and worked hard in his own business affairs; he was bright in dealings and business in general, and his body was of powerful construction; he was of almost giant's strength, when yet in the prime of life. A few spells of sickness, during late years and age together, had however diminished his robustness considerable, but he was still a powerful man last fall. It is surprising how quickly sickness breaks down such strength. Death is no respecter of person.

"O! Why should the spirit of mortal be proud?
Like a swift-fleeting meteor, a fast flying cloud.
A flash of the lightning, a break of the wave
Man passes from life to the rest in the grave."

Mr. Hilscher was buried this noon at the Lowden cemetery. The funeral was held at 11 o'clock from the house with services at the Evangelical church, Rev. Werning officiated. Very beautiful floral pieces decorated the casket. Both the Krieger Verein and the M.B.A. lodges were well represented. It was a long and solemn line of old soldiers and lodge members, who marched at the head of the funeral cortege from the house to the church, and again from the church to the cemetery, as a silent farewell to the departed comrade and brother. Quite a number of relatives and friends from neighboring towns were among the attendance. The following named members of the Krieger Verein acted as pallbearers: Comrades John Stoeker, Wm. Boettger, Henry Graefing, Chris Mohr, Louis Strackbein and Fred Dienst.
