22 January 1909 - The Lowden News

From the Stanwood Herald - Mrs. Elizabeth Gehrls, (nee Moeller) was born near Rockenstorf, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, April 27, 1871. She came to the country in 1892, first going to Kansas and later came to Iowa. She was married to Henry Gehrls in 1894. To this union was born one daughter, Alma, who, with the loving husband, one brother and three sisters, Mrs. Pruess of Clarence, a sister living in Kansas and a sister living in Germany, remain to mourn her departure.

She was of an affectionate disposition, bright and winning in her ways, so that friendship's circle was to her a large one. Indeed, it may be said of her, that none knew her but to love her. To her the struggle and burden bearing of earth are ended, and like one, who awakes from a troubled dream, she has awakened to see life's endless morning break, and knows herself at home with the loved ones, missed from earth, safe about her. Her home instincts were strong here in this fevered world of disappointment. Her affection for friends and kindred was tender and abiding.

Only a few days before her death she was taken ill with what proved to be tuberculosis of the brain. Realizing her end was near, she specially requested the Lord's Supper by Rev. Nagler of St. Paul's German Lutheran church, which was administered on Thursday. She peacefully passed away early Monday morning at 12:30. The funeral services where held Wednesday morning, January 20th, and were conducted by Rev. Schulmeistrat of Clarence. Interment was in the German cemetery at Clarence.
