Stanwood Soldier Killed In Action In Okinawa War Area

Our community was saddened on Wednesday last when it was learned that Dr. and Mrs. O. G. Fenton had received a telegram from the war department stating their son, Richard, had been killed in action on Okinawa.

Richard LeRoy Fenton, was born in Manchester on March 21, 1926 and was killed in the service of his country June 9, 1945. Dick, as he was called by those who knew him, was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church, and the Boy Scouts. He came here with his parents about ten years ago and completed his education in the Stanwood schools. He left to join the Marines before graduation, having enlisted March 21, 1944 and left for service the next month, April 18. His basic training was received at the Marine Corps base at San Diego, Calif. At the completion of which he was sent to Camp Pemberton at Oceanside, Calif. He went overseas in Sept. 1944 and was a member of the 1st Division. He landed on Okinawa on Easter Sunday.

Dick was only 19 years of age and was a fun loving, carefree boy. The heartfelt sympathy of the whole community is extended to the family.

Those who mourn his early passing are his parents Dr. and Mrs. Fenton; one brother in England, Sgt. Vernon Fenton and four sisters, the Misses Jean, Charlene, Mary Lou and Bonnie.
