15 November 1951 - The Tipton Advertiser

Edmund Deardorff, the last of the family of six sons of Daniel and Mary Deardorff was born February 14, 1868 at Tipton, Iowa, and passed away at his home Tuesday morning, Oct. 23, 1951, at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 9 days.

He received his education in the Tipton public school. In young manhood he was engaged in farming with his father.

February 14, 1889, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Porter. These young people established their new home on a farm near Tipton where they made their home for 50 years. To this union were born three daughters, Myrtle, Helen and Dorothy, and one son, Ralph. Ten years ago Mr. and Mrs. Deardorff moved to town where they have since resided.

Ed was a friend and neighbor, ever ready to lend a helping hand. His cheerful spirit helped to make their home a pleasant place for their many acquaintances to visit. His keen interest in the affairs of the day and his forward optimistic outlook on life kept his mind young and alert. He loved his wife, the children, and grandchildren, and was always anxious to make life pleasant for them.

At an early age he became a member of the First Methodist church. He attended the services of the church regularly and supported the program of the church whole heartedly.

Those preceding him in death are his parents and five brothers, his daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Hasenbiller, in 1939, and his son Ralph E. Deardorff, in 1940.

Those who mourn his departure are his devoted wife, two daughters, Mrs. G. K. Frink, of Tama, Iowa, and Mrs. Russell Willer, of Tipton, Iowa, 10 grandchildren, including Ralph's two daughters in Sacramento, Calif., and 6 great-grandchildren, and a host of friends.

He is not dead, this friend, not dead, but on some road, by mortals treads.
Gained some few steps ahead, and nearer to the end;
So that you too, once past the bend, shall meet again, as face to face,
This friend you fancy dead.

Push bravely on, brave heart; the while you travel forward, mile by mile,
He loiters with a backward smile, till you can overtake;
And strains his eyes to search his wake, or calls, as he sees you at the gate,
Coming with a smile.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Oct. 25, at 2 o'clock, in the First Methodist church by the Rev. Leo G. Wolfe, under the direction of the Sheets funeral home. Interment in the Masonic cemetery.
