28 May 1915 - The Lowden News

Tuesday morning the citizens of our town were shocked to hear that "Grandma" Deke had passed away during the early hours of the morning, after a brief illness of only a few days. Her death was more of a shock for the reason that her illness was not considered serious.

Mrs. Katharine Dorothea Deke, nee Cohrs, was born the 1st day of April, 1837, in Linden, Hanover Province, Germany, and died here at her home Tuesday morning, May 25, at the advanced age of 78 years, 1 month and 2 days.

In 1863 she came to the United States with her parents and settled in Illinois. In 1864 she was united in marriage to Frederick Deke. To this union nine children were born: six sons, and three daughters, of which two sons and two daughters preceded the mother to the Great Beyond. The surviving children are Henry, of Watertown, S.D.; Herman and Werner of this place; Chas., of Independence, and Mrs. Bernard Lohmann, of Independence.

In 1865 she and her husband came to Iowa and settled on the Deke farm two miles north of town, which place was their home until some time after the death of her husband in 1899, when she moved to town.

Mrs. Deke was a hard-working woman, a good neighbor, a loving mother, and a faithful member of the German Lutheran church. Besides her children she leaves to mourn 23 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Henry Hintz, of Davenport.

Funeral services took place at the home Thursday afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock and at the Lutheran church at 2:30. Rev. J. H. Brammer conducted the services. Interment was made near her husband in the family lot in the Lowden cemetery.

Those who assisted as pall bearers were Albert Schaefer, Wm. Hein, Ernst Hoffmeier, Henry Hinrichs, F. C. Meier and Henry Koehne.

Relatives from a distance who were here for the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Deke and son, Alfred; Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Lohmann, and daughter, Norma, all of Independence; Mrs. Henry Hintz, Mrs. P. H. Reyelts and Mrs. Stark and son, Rudolph; all of Davenport.
