5 February 1959 - The Clarence Sun

Charles Schilling was born in Meakenburg Strilitz, Germany on February 10, 1869, and died on Tuesday afternoon, January 27, 1959 at his home in Clarence after a long period of illness at the age of 89 years 11 months and 17 days.

When Charles was four and a half, he came with his family to America to the South Bethel Community in Cedar County, in which community he grew up and was educated.

He was married on December 31, 1908 to Sadie Robinson. Many of us remember that they celebrated their Golden Wedding five weeks ago.

After marriage he moved to a farm near Clarence where he lived until his health failed, whereupon he moved into Clarence some 38 years ago.

He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, Sadie and their only son, Roscoe. There are also Mrs. Roscoe Schilling and four grandchildren, Bonnie, Jimmy, Lynn and Peggy Schilling, all of Clarence. Two brothers, William of Clarence, and Ed of Tipton. Two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Kelly of Davenport and Mrs. Hannah Dickinson of West Branch.

At an early age, Charles united with the Methodist Church at South Bethel, later transferring his membership to the Clarence Methodist Church in February of 1910. To the Church he gave of himself and his talents serving in many capacities of service, probably most worthy as a Sunday School teacher and as Young Peoples leader in what was then called the Epworth League. Even though it has been a long time since he was able to attend Church, he always kept an interest in the things and happenings of the Church.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 29th, 1959, being conducted by Rev. Cyril Ashton with the assistance of Rev. R. C. Scott, a former pastor of the Clarence church. The music was furnished by a male quartet with Mrs. Robert Joslin as organist. In charge of the floral tributes were Mrs. Anna Budelier and Mrs. Amelia Hasselbusch. The pallbearers were Lester Kelly, Elmer Sawyer, Howard McClellan, Frank Fisher, Jr., Roger Baldwin and Lloyd Hasselbusch.

Interment was made in the Clarence Cemetery.
