5 June 1903 - The Lowden News

In Blue Hill, Neb., at the home of her son-in-law, Wm. A. May, Mrs. Hannah Kinney died May 24, 1903. Hannah Northrop was born at Camden, N. Y, Jan. 25th, 1827. On Dec. 25th, 1845, she was united in marriage to Bela B. Kinney. To this union were born six children, Truman, Clara, Mary, Bela, Lora and Irene. Only one, Mrs. J. W. Simmers of Estherville, Iowa, survives her. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Pearl May, Walter and Ethel Simmers, two sisters and four brothers. She came to Lowden in 1859 and made her home here for more than twenty years, then removing to the southern part of the state, from there they moved to Minnesota. Her remains were taken to Werthington, Minn., and buried by the side of her husband, who past from this life fourteen years ago.

Mother Kinney, as she was called, is well remembered by many readers of The News. She was always a kind and benevolent lady. Her efforts appeared to be entirely devoted to charity. She was the quiet nurse of all the sick about her. With pleasure and motherly care she dressed the infants when born in her neighborhood, she helped hundreds in their troubles during life's journey and when death crossed the threshold of her neighbor's door, "Mother Kinney" was there to help and to console. For all of her Christian charity she will now receive her reward in the better land, where no sorrow enters.
