18 December 1924 - The Tipton Advertiser

Dora Eliza, daughter of Richard K. and Amanda Shepherd, was born near Perry, Ohio, February 14, 1868, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Carl Crozer, near West Liberty, Iowa, on December 6, 1924, at the age of 56 years, 9 months and 22 days.

When two years of age she moved with her parents to Iowa, settling on a farm southeast of Tipton, where she grew to womanhood. On December 25th, 1888, she was united in marriage to Walter I. Smith, of Bennett, Iowa. To this union four children were born: one son, Earl, and three daughters, Mrs. Carl Cozer, Mrs. Phillip Phelps, and Mrs. Dawey Hawker, all of West Liberty, all of whom, with her husband survive, and were with her when she passed away. She is also survived by her only brother, William Shepherd of Tipton, Iowa, and four grandchildren, Fern Crozer, Joe Phelps, Virginia Smith and Robt. Hawker.

In early girlhood she united with the M. E. church, but later transferred her membership to the M. E. Church of Downey, Iowa, of which she was a faithful and consistent member at the time of her death. She was also a member of the Pythian Sister Temple of West Liberty.

Mrs. Smith was a splendid Christian woman, an ideal mother and has had a remarkable influence over her family. Truly, "they rise up and call her blessed." Appreciating in the highest sense all that she has done for them.

Funeral services were held December 9th in the M. E. church, West Liberty, conducted by the Rev. J. S. Wood of Waukee, Iowa, former pastor of the Downey church, and an intimate friend of the family.

Interment was made in the Oakridge cemetery at West Liberty.
