George William Sheldon was born on July 7, 1887, in Clinton County, Iowa. After a lingering illness he passed away in his home in Clarence on June 28, 1951, having almost reached the age of 64. He had followed the trade of a carpenter in this community for 36 years.
On June 29, 1916, George was married to Nettie Henkes in Rock Island, Illinois. He joined the Methodist Church in Clarence in 1945. He had long been an enthusiastic member of the local Commercial Club.
George was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, two brothers, and a two-year-old daughter. Immediate survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nettie Sheldon of Clarence; two daughters, Mrs. Shirley Blake and Donna, both of Clarence; six sons, George Jr., of Cedar Rapids, and Dale, Gilbert, John, Dean and Donald, all of Clarence; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Willmen Barker, of Wilton; Mrs. Orie Farwell, of Charlotte; Mrs. Jean Jacobsen of Delmar and Mrs. Wm. Foley of Moline and many other distant relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church on Saturday afternoon, June 30th, with Rev. A. D. Holtry officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. John Paul and Mrs. Howard Folk accompanied by Mrs. Marvin Schilling. In charge of the beautiful floral pieces were Anne Shriver and Eleanor Stonerook. Pallbearers were Raymond Doermann, John Stock, Lavern Meyer, Walter Hartwig, Howard Claney and F. J. Bachman.
Interment was made in the Clarence Cemetery.
