Dietrich Friedrich Ernst Bergmann, son of the late Ernst Bergmann and his wife, Helene nee Wiggert, was born on July 27, 1863, in Estorf, Germany. He departed this life Sunday, April 17, 1949, at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 20 days.
He attended Parochial school in Estorf and at the age of fourteen was confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran faith. Immediately after his confirmation he went to the doman Schaeferhof, where he entered the employ of the Burgomeister.
After five years he decided to come to America. On August 27, 1882, he landed in New York and lived with his sister, Mary, of whom he was very fond. On June 10, 1886, he was married to Miss Sophia Reinking in New York. This union was blessed with 2 daughters and 3 sons.
Mr. and Mrs. Bergmann lived in New York until 1890 when they came to Cedar County. They lived 6 miles southeast of Clarence on what is still known as the Reinking farm. Later they bought a farm 3 miles northwest of Lowden where they lived for 13 years. Then they purchased a farm 3 1/2 miles south of Clarence where they lived for 10 years before they retired. They moved to Clarence in 1916.
Mrs. Bergmann departed this life on February 21, 1921. A daughter, Mrs. Herman E. Rix in 1928 and a son, George in 1941, preceded Mr. Bergmann in death.
He leaves to mourn his death two sons; Julius of Clarence; Elmer of Mt. Vernon, iowa, and one daughter, Mrs. Paul Pruess of Clarence; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were from the Chapman Funeral home at 1:30 and St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church at 2 on Tuesday, April 19th with burial in St. John's cemetery.
Music for the services was by the church choir. Those in charge of the flowers: Mrs. Ernest Doermann and Mrs. Wm. Rix. Pallbearers: Ernest Doermann, John Pfettscher, Wm. Rix, Fred Miller, John Hasenbank, Wm. Radeke.
