Cedar Rapids, June 28. – The jailor of Tipton, Iowa, was shot yesterday in the breast by a prisoner named Charles Castello, and he in turn shot Castello just above the elbow, which was amputated in the morning. Castello entered the sheriff’s office, stole the keys, and conveyed them to a burglar, named Crawford, who made a noise in opening the doors, attracting the attention of the jailor’s wife, who gave the alarm. The jailor rushed down with a shot-gun, found Crawford in the hall and threatened to shoot him, when Castello, who was outside, fired, shooting jailor Simons, Simons put the muzzle of the gun in the hole that Castello fired through, and shot off Castello’s arm. Castello fled, but was captured by the sheriff.
