Ferris Beattie Van Ornam was born on February 15, 1843 and died on April 6, 1919 in Long Beach, Los Angeles, California. He married Alice Glime on April 21, 1869 in Davenport, Scott, Iowa. She was born January 27, 1850 and died December 29, 1934 in Long Beach, California. He is buried in Wilmington Cemetery in Wilmington, California where his brother Edward and his mother, Harriet (Ross) VanOrnam [died September 4, 1906] are also buried.
Ferris came with his parents and siblings to Davenport, Scott County, Iowa. They were there in the 1860 federal census. By 1870 and after his marriage in 1869, he settled in Cass County, Iowa.
Are you aware of the book he wrote? "Potatoes for Profit" published by W. A. Burpee & Co., Philadelphia, 1895. It is out of copyright. I am enclosing the link to a .pdf copy of the original book:

An original copy of the book is for sale for $5.00:

Ferris Van Ornam's mother, Harriet (Ross) Van Ornam was the daughter of Peter Ross and Polly Kendall (Burpee) Ross who was the daughter of Jeremiah Burpee and Mary (Kendall) Burpee. The founder of Burpee Seed Company was Washington Atlee [W.A.] Burpee who was Ferris' fifth cousin. He probably did not know how or if they were related.
Hope this helps. Most records are "Ornam" and not "Orman." I am not related -- just did a little searching for biographical details for you.
