John gilbaugh born May 8 1825 died May 1 1895, aged 69 years 11 months 26 days.
John Gilbaugh to whom death was the messenger of peace and relief from suffering was one of the well known and thoroughly respected men of this community. He was one of the sturday sort, and was valued as a citizen an acquaintance, a friend. he was a Christian gentleman , had been honest in his dealings with his fellows and lived at the head of a good household, doing right in all things as he was guided by his heart. John Gilbaugh was born in Perry county, PA, of German parents, At the age of sixteen he became a carpenter's apprentice and learned his trade thoroughly.
In 1847 he married Miss Mary Gladden, and together they lived until October of a year ago, when she was suddenly stricken while visiting near Anita. since her death mr. Gilbaugh has steadily failed in health and his death came as a relief last Saturday afternoon, he being surrounded by a number of children and friends.
Mr Gilbaugh moved to Iowa in 1865 and came to Cass co in 1875, where he settled in Lincoln township. He retired from active labor seven years ago when he moved to Atlantic. Nine children are left to mourn their father, four of whom attended him at his last illness.
Mr gilbaugh was a member of Kedron Commandery, Knights Templar and of the I.O.O. F. Lodge. The funeral was conducted at the Congregational church, the sermon being delivered by Rev. stanley from heb 11: 13-16. the theme of the address being"Life's Pilgrimage." The funeral was largely attended by those who sought to pay their last respects to this good man.
