EDINA, Minn. / MADISON—Philip E. Harris, age 66, died on Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, at N.C. Little Hospice in Edina, Minn., after a difficult battle with multiple myeloma. He was born on June 20, 1951, in Atlantic, Iowa. He married Karen Hirl from Davenport, Iowa, on Dec. 18, 1971.
Phil grew up on a family farm and graduated from Iowa State University. He received both his Masters in Economics and his law degree from the University of Chicago. Phil was an avid runner and was involved in church activities and Bible study.Phil was an Emeritus Professor and former chair of the Agriculture and Applied Economics Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he taught agricultural law for 37 years. He founded and directed Tax Insight, LLC, a company that provides education for tax practitioners. He was also one of the founders of the Land Grant University Tax Education Foundation, and until 2015, Phil was the lead editor for its annual tax book used by over 30,000 tax practitioners each year.
The greatest joy in his life was his family. He is survived by his wife, Karen; son, Seth (Kate) Harris; and daughter, Rachel (Steve) Finch. He is also survived by five grandchildren and three siblings.
