Jarine Harris Highley

Jerry passed away with her family by her side June 1, 2010 in Dallas, TX.

Jerry was born in Atlantic, Iowa to Leo and Marie Harris. She graduated from Atlantic High School and attended Drake University in Des Moines where she studied drama and was a member of Delta Zeta sorority.

Jerry spent many years as a Docent and later an employee of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. She was known for her friendly personality, gregarious laugh, and delicious “baked goods”. At an early age, Jerry discovered John Wayne. She became an eternal fan and an authority on his life.

Our beautiful mother loved to sing and dance. An adored mother and grandmother, she taught her girls that everyone deserved to be treated with respect.

Jerry is survived by her daughters: Kim Highley, Tami Gaston and husband Jim, Shannon Mayes and husband Robert, her granddaughter Emma Claire Mayes and numerous nieces and nephews. Her precious love and companion, Jenny the Cat, will miss Jerry immensely.

Preceded in death by her parents and husband Jack, brother James Harris, and Great Nephew Jeff Harris.

Special thanks to mom’s dear friends and protectors Rickey Perry and Tonja Cherry. Her family would especially like to thank her doctor Elizabeth Wickersham and hospice nurse Gayla Nottnagel from Physician’s Choice Hospice in Oklahoma City as well as the nurses and aides form Reachout Home Care and Vitas Hospice who lovingly cared for her the last week of her life in Dallas.

Tami gives special thanks to Dr. Wickersham and Paula Avery for compassionately teaching her to take this journey with mom.

Jerry was a great animal lover. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Humane Society of the United States @ www.humanesociety.org

A celebration of Jerry Highley's life will take place June 23, 2010, 2:00 P.M. at The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
