CASS PIONEER, PASSED YESTERDAY

Mrs. Whited, Who Died Yesterday at Anita, Came to County 34 Years Ago.

ANITA, Ia., March 10, --(Special to News-Telegraph)

Mrs. Sarah J. Whited, who passed away yesterday morning at her home here, was a pioneer of Cass county. Her maiden name was Sarah J. Smith and she was born in Dallas county, Iowa, May 9th, 1855, and passed away at her home in Anita, Cass county, Iowa, March 8th, 1922, at the age of sixty-six years and ten months. She was the daughter of Jesse and Mary Ann (Paul) Smith, who came to Iowa in an early day from their native state, Indiana. A number of years later, her parents moved to Shelby county, Iowa, where the deceased was united in marriage on January 1, 1874, to Normon Whited, who passed away on March 14, 1900. To this union was born seven children, five daughters and two sons, all of whom are living, as follows: Mrs. Mary Brown, of Lake Wilson, Minn., Mrs. Bertha Keasey, of Wiota, Ia.; Mrs. Nellie Tompkin, of Eddyville, Neb.; Mrs. Avery Stephenson and Miss Anna Whited, of Anita; Wm. E. Whited, of Hinkley, Minn., and Simon A. Whited, of Wichita, Kas. Other relatives are one sister, Mrs. Burton, of Thermopolis, Wyoming; three half sister, one half brother and nineteen grandchildren.

In Cass 34 Years.

Mother Whited had been a resident of Cass county for thirty-four years. On account of ill health, extending over a period of twelve years, she disposed of her farm seven years ago, purchased a home and moved to Anita, where, during her declining days, she was given every care and attention by her daughter, Miss Anna Whited, who has been her constant companion, faithful and devoted in the discharge of every duty, in making Mother’s last days comfortable, cheerful and happy.

At the age of fifteen years, Mother Whited united with the Christian church, and lived a life consistent with her profession; meeting and overcoming the trials, difficulties and disappointments which come to us all, with faith and confidence in that precious promise, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end;” and the eternal reward has come to the kind neighbor, the faithful friend, and one of the best of mothers; of whom it has been truly said, “is the only flower in memory’s urn.”

Funeral Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at the M. E. church in Anita, Sunday afternoon at 1:00 o’clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. R. Radliff, and interment will be made in the Wiota cemetery. The casket will not be opened at the church.
