Thomas L. McDermott, 83 of Atlantic, passed away Tuesday Sept. 30, 2003 at the Heritage House in Atlantic.

Thomas Luke McDermott was born Jan. 18, 1920 in Wiota, the son of Fredric [Frederick] H. and Ona Malone McDermott.

He was raised in Wiota and graduated from the Wiota High School.

Tom served in the Philippines with the U. S. Army during WWII.

On Jan. 3, 1949, Tom married Lois Darlene Steffens in Des Moines. The lived in Lyman for several years before buying the Fletcher Chapel Store and running it for 17 years. The family moved to Atlantic in 1969 and Tom worked for Gregersen Drug, Fann Pharmacy, and Cook Pharmacy prior to his retirement.

Tom was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic.

Thomas McDermott is survived by his wife, Lois of Atlantic; two sons, Rick and his wife, Melinda McDermott of Atlantic, Jerry and his wife Devon McDermott of Atlantic; four granddaughters, Cammy McDermott of Minneapolis, Minn., Leslie Odefey and her husband Kent of Davenport, Emily McDermott of Atlantic, and Ashley McDermott of Atlantic; a great-granddaughter, Paige Odefey of Davenport; one aunt, Lela Mae Poch of Atlantic.
