OBITUARY

Matilda McClurg Herbert, daughter of William McClurg and Nancy White McClurg, was born July 28, 1829, and died September 11, 1914, at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 13 days. She was the last of a family of nine children. Matilda McClurg was united in marriage to Ebenezer Herbert on January 24, 1850, in Ohio and in the following March moved to Janesville, Wis. In 1854 they went to Green county, Indiana, staying there one year. In 1855 the moved to Mahaska county, Iowa, living there until 1868, when they came to Cass county.

Her husband, E. E. Herbert, who served a term as sheriff of this county, died in 1883.

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert were the parents of nine children. The surviving children are John S. Herbert of the Buck Creek vicinity, Mrs. Ina Bales of Ft. Collins, Colo., Mrs. Elsie Smith and Mrs Nora Tally of Atlantic. Five children have preceded them to the great beyond. Besides the children there are sixteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren and a host of living friends to mourn her loss.

The deceased was a lady of beautiful Christian character, a kind and loving disposition, one who was revered and honored by every one, and for many years a member of the Buck Creek Methodist church. She was a loving and attentive mother, always thing of her children’s comfort and welfare rather than her own. He last admonition to them was to lead lives true to their God and for them not to weep for her.

It can truly be said of her that to have known her was but to love her.

The funeral was held at the Christian church at Atlantic, Rev. C. W. Hohanshelt preaching and the pastor, with a number of her former pastors, taking part in the service.
