C. E. MALONE, 63, POSTMASTER HERE, PASSES SUDDENLY

Charles Edward Malone, 63, Atlantic postmaster and one of the most outstanding citizens of his native Cass county, died suddenly about 6 o’clock last evening as the result of a heart attack suffered while working in the yard at his home, 701 East Ninth street. Mr. Malone had been working with a team and scraper in the garden for about a half hour before he was stricken.

He sat down on the scraper and was talking to tow neighbor children, Patty Hannon and Beverly Lau, and just after remarking that it was heavy work, he collapsed and the two little girls summoned Mr. and Mrs. William Borchardt, Mrs. Don Epperly and Mrs. M. E. Lau. He passed away shortly after neighbors reached his side.

Mr. Malone was born Oct. 24, 1881, near Wiota, the son of B. F. and Rebecca Malone, and was reared on a farm in the Wiota vicinity. He was married in Atlantic April 18, 1906, to Miss Edna Harris of Atlantic and after living on a farm north of here three years, the couple moved to a farm at the south outskirts of Atlantic on Olive street, residing there for 26 years. In 1934, they moved to their present home at 701 East Ninth.

In 1904, Mr. Malone founded the Malone Seed company, now operated by his two sons, Claude and Cecil, and for forty years he prepared Cass county’s exhibit which won numerous blue ribbons at the Iowa state fair. He was an exhibitor at the Los Angeles world fair, the Omaha corn exhibition in 1908 and assisted in preparing the Iowa exhibit at the St. Louis world fair in 1903.

When the Rock Island railroad held its celebration in Chicago in 1929, Mr. Malone was selected to represent the Midwest, one of four representatives from various parts of the country. The group went to Chicago by special train, and included a movie star, a cattleman from Texas and Johnnie Baker, stepson of Buffalo Bill Cody and the picture of these four representatives of different sections of the country is on exhibit at Buffalo Bill’s grave near Golden, Colo.

Mr. Malone was Cass county treasurer from 1914 to 1918 and served as member of the Cass county board of supervisors from 1924 to 1930. He represented Cass county in the Iowa legislature from 1930 to 1934 and was state senator from the Cass-Shelby county district from 1934 until his appointment as Atlantic postmaster in 1936.

Since the Atlantic “most valuable citizen” award was inaugurated two years ago, Mr. Malone had been nominated both years for his outstanding community service. As postmaster, he personally delivered letters from men overseas to relatives as soon as they were received at the office, whether at night or on holidays and throughout his lifetime, he was active in community and charitable enterprises. He was a member of Atlantic B. P. O. Elks lodge 445 and the National Association of Postmasters.

Surviving besides the widow and two sons are a twin sister, Miss Charlotte Malone, of Atlantic; two brothers, S. M. Malone of Wiota and H. R. Malone of San Francisco and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Atlantic Methodist church, the Rev. Lauren D. Thomas officiating, and interment will be in the Atlantic cemetery. The remains will be at the family home until the hour of the service.
