Bernard LeRoy Butler, 74, of Atlantic, passed away Monday, December 3, 2001, at his home after a lengthy illness. The son of Guy Allison and Daisy Pearl (Walker) Butler, Bernard was born May 10, 1927 in Atlantic where he grew up and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1945. His marriage to Eleanor Mildred Vernon took place on May 24, 1945 in Atlantic.

Bernard entered the United States Army in July of 1945 and served in France and Germany being discharged in 1946. He returned to Atlantic and was employed by Jobes Tire and Electric for seventeen years. In 1961 Bernard was self-employed and owned and operated Butler Garage until retiring in 1973. He was a member of the Am vets and the American Legion Post #43.

Surviving are two sons, Jim (J.B.) Butler and wife Laurel and Gail Butler and wife Kathy; one daughter Pat Dennis and husband Bob, all of Atlantic; seven grandchildren, Chris Butler and wife Carol, Jacque Park and husband Josh, Jeremy Butler, Jill Leonard and husband Doug, all of Atlantic, Cherie Petty and husband Sid of Audubon, Peggy Christensen of Des Moines and Andy Dennis of Hampton, Virginia; six great-grandchildren, Levi Butler, Cody Christensen, Amanda Christensen, Summer Petty, Cooper Leonard and Tate Park; two sisters, Shirley Nolte and husband Don of Atlantic and Beverly Moller of Omaha; a sister-in-law Nadine Butler of Atlantic; a longtime friend Marjorie Schneider of Atlantic and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Eleanor; a brother Kenneth Butler and a sister Maxine Grinstead.

Funeral Information Services for Bernard will be held on Friday, December 7, 2001, at 1:30 P.M. at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic with Rev. Chuck Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
