MRS. FRANK C. SMITH DEAD.

Wife of a Well Known Stockman and Farmer Expires Suddenly at Family Home.

Mrs. Frank C. Smith died suddenly this morning of heart failure at her home one mile north of the Buck Creek church. Her death was wholly unexpected by the members of the family and it will come as a shock to her many friends and acquaintances throughout the county.

For many years she had been afflicted with severe headaches and last night she suffered one of those attacks, but this morning appeared to be enjoying her customary health. Mrs. Smith was still in bed about 8 o’clock when her daughter carried up a cup of coffee which her mother drank and stated that she was feeling better, would sleep a little longer and then get up. These were doubtless the last words she ever spoke as a few moments later when another daughter went to her room Mrs. Smith was dead. Dr. Morris was hastily summoned and an examination revealed that Mrs. Smith had died of heart failure.

Mrs. Frank C. Smith was born in Randolph county, Indiana, February 5th, 1849, and was married in the same county in the month of February 1869. She came with her husband to Cass county in the fall of the same year, locating on the farm north of the Buck Creek church where she died. She is survived by her husband and two brothers, J. W. Butler of Pymosa township, and Robert P. Butler of Atlantic. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Carter, living on a farm adjoining her parents, and Miss Dessie, who lives with her parents.

The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon, the 6th, at 2 o’clock, at the Buck Creek Church. Those attending the funeral will meet at the Smith home at 1:30 o’clock and then proceed to the church. Rev. Hunter, of Marne, will conduct the funeral services. Interment will be made in the Atlantic cemetery.

WAS FOUND DEAD IN BED

Mrs. Frank C. Smith Died Suddenly This Morning at Her Home in Pymosa Township.

Mrs. Frank C. Smith, one of the pioneers of this county and one of its most widely known women, was found dead in bed this morning at 7:30 o’clock at her home in Buck Creek, Pymosa township. Mrs. Smith had complained of a sick headache the night before but the family had no thoughts of its seriousness as she frequently suffered with such attacks and recovered within a few hours[.] She had, however, suffered from a heart disease for several years.

The other members of the family were up some time this morning before the usual time for Mrs. Smith to arise and the daughter went into her mother’s room and took her a cup of coffee. Mrs. Smith made the remark that she was not feeling well and would not get up for a few minutes, so the daughter went out of the room and when she returned in about half an hour she was horrified to find her mother dead[.] Her
Death comes as a great shock to the members of the family and her many friends and her husband is almost prostrated with grief. Death resulted from heart failure.

Mrs. Smith was one of the early settlers of this county. In 1870 she with her husband removed from Indiana to the farm where she died this morning. The husband is the owner of one of the largest farms in the northwest section of the county and is an extensive stock raiser. The deceased was well known throughout the county and had always been an active worker in the Methodist church and the religious organizations connected with that body.

The deceased whose maiden name was Mary E. Butler, was born in Randolph county, Indiana, February 5th, 1849, and was a daughter of Edward and Mary F. Butler. She was married in 1869 to Frank C. Smith, who is also a native of Indiana, and a year after their marriage they moved to this county where they have resided ever since. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Mary E., now Mrs. G. W. Carter of this county, Daisy, deceased, and Dessie E[.], who is living at home. Besides the children the bereaved family is composed of a husband and two brothers, J. W. Butler of Pymosa township and Robert E. Butler of Atlantic.

The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Buck Creek church, the Rev. Hunter of Marne officiating, and interment will be made in the Marne [Atlantic] cemetery.
