Obituary for Joseph Joyce

JOSEPH “JOE” EVERETT JOYCE - Joe Joyce, 96, lifelong Cass County resident, passed away Friday April 24, 2009 at Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa. Joseph Everett was born September 7, 1912 in Atlantic to John Richard and Dula Lamphere Joyce. He graduated with the Atlantic High School Class of 1930 and was one of three surviving classmates, including Loren King and Izetta Bopp, all of Atlantic. After he graduated, he farmed with his father west of the Buck Creek Church. He married Mary Ethel Sarsfield on September 7, 1938 (Joe's birthday) in Spencer, Iowa. It was discovered years later that the jewelers receipt for the wedding rings was $19.38, the same as the year they were married. Soon, Joe and Ethel farmed and began a family on his parent's farm. In 1949 they purchased a farm in Benton Township, where they worked until moving to Atlantic in 1973. At that time Joe retired from farming and worked with his lifelong friends; Ralph Knop and Lyle Harris remodeling kitchens and building cabinets. Later Joe enjoyed his hobbies of woodworking, stained glass, and coming to the aid of his friends' ailing furniture. Joe simply enjoyed work, but as time allowed, he enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors and especially his grandchildren. He was a dedicated member of the Atlantic United Methodist Church and Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his wife Ethel; brothers, Harold and Claude Joyce; sisters, Lucille Turner and Mildred Smith; and daughter-in-law Laurie Joyce. He is survived by his children, son James and wife Ramona Joyce of Sidney, Nebraska, daughter Jean and husband Walter Wharton of Dallas, Texas, son Lauren and wife Donna Joyce of Marne, Iowa, and a son Russell and wife Linda of Atlantic, Iowa; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren, and one sister Betty Jensen of Atlantic, Iowa; and a number of nieces and nephews.

There will be open visitation from 8:00 to 5:00 daily and the family will meet with relatives and friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday, April 27 at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Joe's funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. at United Methodist Church at 8th and Poplar Street in Atlantic, Iowa. Pastor Gary DeGeest will preside and the committal service will be in the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic.
