GENEVIEVE A. DODDS

Genevieve A. Dodds was born October 19, 1904, in Atlantic, Iowa. She was the daughter of Horace Courtney and Emma Kennedy Acker and the second child of a family of four girls and four boys. She passed away January 21, 1997 at the Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield, Iowa at the age of 92 years.

As a young girl Genevieve moved with her family to the Schickley, Nebraska area. After some years the family moved back to Canby, Iowa where she finished high school in Casey, Iowa. She went to College in Cedar Rapids where she received training as an elememtary [elementary] teacher, and returned to the Canby area and taught in several one-room schools south of there.

On August 8, 1927, Genevieve married Eugene Chafa Dodds, a radio sales and repairman, and a substitute mail carrier at the Fontanelle Post Office, where he later became postmaster.

After raising two sons, Dwight and Kay, to a reasonable age she returned to teaching in the Fontanelle Schools. Teaching was her first love and many area residents, as well as their children, have benefitted [benefited] from her firm but loving instruction. Gene and Genevieve retired in 1959 and later moved to the Fort Myers, Florida area. While in Florida Genevieve could not stay away from teaching so volunteered to substitute as needed. This of course soon turned into a full time teaching where she received several commendations from the Lee County Superintendent of Schools. They stayed in Florida until 1970 when they returned to Fontanelle. In these later years she continued to substitute teach in the Bridgewater-Fontanelle schools and served in their libraries as well as the Fontanelle Public Library.

Genevieve was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Fontanelle. As a skilled seamstress she spent many years quilting with the Mayflower Guild there. She was also very active in the Fontanelle Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and had received her fifty years of service recognition.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Emma Acker; brothers, Donald and Dale; sisters, Lola and Phyllis; husband, Eugene and son, Dwight.

She is survived by her son, Kay Dodds and wife Neoma of Hilton, New York; grandchildren; David Dodds of Hilton, New York and Kayla Dodds of Galway, New York; a great granddaughter Jocelyn of Galway, New York; sister, Jean Darrow and husband Deane of Fontanelle; two brothers: Wayne Acker and wife Virginia of Fontanelle and Wilbur Acker and wife Lucille of Creston; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
