DEATH OF W. FRANKLIN

Old Settler of This County Passes Away Early This Morning of Old Age—Was 85 Year Old.

Having passed the Biblical three score years and ten by fifteen years, Washington Franklin, an old settler of the county and the father of George W. Franklin, a prominent journalist of this state, passed away this morning at his home in Grove township at 1:30 o’clock. The aged man had been a sufferer from heart trouble for many years, but his wonderful constitution had overcome this trouble and he passed away peacefully this morning of old age after an illness of eight weeks. At his deathbed were his two daughters and his son, George W., editor of the Iowa Register and Farmer, who has been with his father for the last few days.

Washington Franklin was born in Noble county, Ohio, May 21st, 1822, and in that community he spent his boyhood days and grew to manhood. He engaged at an early age in the dry goods business in a small town in Indiana and remained there for twenty one years, being there married in 1843 to Miss Louisa Hasty, who died here a year ago last month. In 1869 he and his wife removed to Cass county and settled in Turkey Grove, where they resided for about a year when they removed to the place where Mr. Franklin died this morning.

The deceased had always led an upright life and had been from his youth an active member in the Christian church, belonging to that body for over fifty-six years. He was one of the elders and founders of the Bethel Christian church. While he was prominent in an admiring circle of friends, he never joined a secret organization, being devoted only to his church life.

The bereaved family is composed of two daughters and one son, Mrs. Maggie Chenoweth of San Francisco, Cal., Mrs. Ellen Wyckoff, who resides on a farm adjoining the one on which her father spent most of his life, and George W. Franklin of Des Moines.

The funeral services will be conducted from the late residence Sunday morning at 10 o’clock by the Rev. Dunkelberger of the Cumberland Christian church. Interment will be made in the Atlantic cemetery by the side of his wife.
