January 13, 1938[AN]ITA RESIDENT IS TAKEN BY DEATH
[Mr]s. J. D. Peterson, 76, Passes Away [Fol]lowing Paralytic Stoke and Brain Hemorrhage; Funeral Held Saturday, Afternoon.
[Mr]s. J. D. Peterson, 76, a well [know]n and long time resident of Ani-[ta an]d Cass county, passed away at [h]ome on East Main Street at [??] o’clock last Wednesday morn-[ing]. She had been in her usual health [th]e past few years until evening [of C]hristmas day when she suffered [a par]alytic stoke from which she [did n]ot recover, and on Monday, Jan. [5th a ] severe brain hemorrhage followed [that] resulted in her death.
Obituary.
[Ma]ry Jane Berry, oldest daughter of [J.] W. and Harriet Berry, was born [at Pe]tersburg, Ill., on June 4, 1861, [she c]ame with her parents to Cass [count]y, Iowa, on Feb. 26, 1867, in a [cover]ed wagon over the old Morman [Trail]. She spent all but a few years [of her] life in Cass county.
[She] was married to J. D. Peterson [of?] Etna, Iowa, on Dec. 23, 1880, [at Ma]rne, Iowa. To this union nine [childr]en, three daughters and six [sons] were born, two sons passing [in] infancy. Mr. Peterson passed [a]t Anita on June 12, 1929. Those [liv]ing] of her family are the seven [childre]n, Mrs. Harvey Turner of Ani-[ta], [Ro]ss F. Peterson of Hendrum, [Mn.,] G. Leland Peterson of George, Mrs. William Schaake of Lenox, John R. Peterson of Oakland, Mrs. D. M. McLennan of Des [Moine]s and Cecil B. Peterson of Ro-[lleston], New Zealand.
[She] is also survived by two broth-[ers an]d two sisters, W. B. Berry and [R. A.] Berry, both of Atlantic. Mrs. [John] Burkey of Walnut and Mrs. [Rufus] Dunham of Burbank, Cal. She [le]aves ten grandchildren, Maurine, [??]ce and Kenneth Turner of Ani-[ta] [?A]rdelle and Vera Peterson of [Dendr]um, Minn., J. Don Peterson in [the P]hillippine Islands, Dale Peterson [??]es, Robert Peterson of George, [Fr]ederick and Margaret McLennan [De]s Moines.
[Mrs.] Peterson was a member of [the M]ethodist church at Marne until [her f]amily moved to Anita in 1906 [when] she transferred her membership [to the] Congregational church. She [a]lways a willing worker in the [churc]h and community, and her upper-[most] thoughts were always for the [welfare] of those around her. She was a [ki]nd loving mother and compan-[ion, a]nd a friend to everyone.
[Fun]eral serviced were held at 1:00 [last?] Saturday afternoon at the [Congr]egational church and were con-[ducted] by Rev. D. B. S. Prather, pas-[tor] of the Methodist church, assisted [by Re]v. Thos. B. Dixon of the Con-[grega]tional church. Burial was made [in the] family lot in the Brighton [cemet]ery near Marne.
