J. W. BUTLER PASSES AWAY

Pioneer of the County and Man Respected by All Who Knew Him Died at 3:20 this Morning at Home of His Son.

Joh William Butler, for forty years a resident of this county, and a man loved and respected by all who knew him, died at 3:20 this morning at the home of his son, Bert L. Butler, at 407 West Sixth street, death coming after weeks of suffering with cancer. Several weeks ago Mr. Butler submitted to an operation for the removal of what was thought to be an abscess in his side, and when the surgeons made the incision they discovered that he was suffering with cancer. Part of the cancer was removed, but it was impossible to remove the rest of it and for weeks he suffered till death came to relieve him.

Obituary.

John William Butler, eldest son of Edward and Mary Fields Butler, was born in Randolph county, Indiana September 26, 1838, and died at the home of his son, Bert L. Butler, 407 West Sixth street, Atlantic, Ia., July 20, 1914, aged 75 years 9 months and 24 days. He was married to Florentina Edwards in Randolph county, Indiana, November 15, 1860.

To this union was born seven children, five of whom survive him, the wife and mother being called to her reward a little over three years ago. One son, Elmer, and one daughter, Floretta, died when quite young. The children who survive and deeply morun, [mourn] his loss are Mrs. G. W. Ringle, E. O., J. B., Emmett E. and Bert L. Butler, all of this city, and all of whom were with his and anxious to alleviate his suffering and render all possible aid and assistance during his last illness. Fourteen grandchildren are left who will always revere, love and cherish the memory of “Grandpa” as he was so affectionately know by them.

The only remaining member of his immediate family is one brother, Robert B. Butler of this city. In the year 1869 [the[ deceased, accompanied by his little family emigrated to Cass county, Iowa, making the trip by wagon train, into what was then a raw prairie country in the true sense of the word, and settled on a farm in Pymosa township, possession of which he retained until last year, at which time it was sold.

Deceased was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for more than forty years. For more than fifty years he was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and it may truthfully be said inculcateed [inculcated] in his every day life the tenets of that grand organization, friendship, love and truth, in all his dealings with mankind.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon, July 21, at 2:30 at the Methodist Episcopal church of this city, services being conducted by the Rev. Mr. Hancox, assisted by the Rev. A. Broadfoot, after which he will be laid to rest by the side of his companion of more than fifty years.
