Symonds, Ida M Walker -
Ida Walker Symonds, 92, the daughter of R. W. and Mary Johnston Walker, was born on Feb. 23, 1884 in Cass County, Iowa, and passed away on Aug. 16, 1976 at the Lenox Care Center following a brief illness. She had lived most of her life in Cass and Adams counties.
Ida's mother died when she was 6 years old and she grew to womanhood in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob DeVore of rural Massena.
On Feb. 21 1906 she was united in marriage with Harry Symonds at the DeVore home.
Three daughters and three sons were born to bless this union. Ida loved people and found great pleasure in having them drop in for a visit. No caller ever left her home without being served refreshments of some kind and being thanked again and again for stopping by. She was also that rarity a true pioneer, in this day and age of good
roads and easy travel, for as a child she traveled to Kansas in a covered wagon and lived for a time in a sod house. The love and the fun she shared and enjoyed with her children, grandchildren, and neighbors down through the years surely helped to keep her young.
She was life long member of the Methodist Church, joining first at Victoria, later transferring to the Mt. Pleasant church and finally transferring to the Corning church when she moved to town.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harry, one daughter Hazel Mane and a son Donald. Surviving to mourn her passing are her two sons, Harold of Cherokee Village, Ark., and Walter E. of Council Bluffs, Iowa, daughters, Dorothy (Mrs. Leland Hegwood) of Lenox, and Esther (Mrs. Donald Hogan) of Corning and a foster daughter, Mrs. William (Blanche) Gregory of Kansas City, Mo., sixteen grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, a number of other relatives and a great many friends.
Services were held Wednesday at the Methodist Church in Corning with Rev. James W. King officiating.
Organist was Susan Symonds and vocalists were Debbie King and Priscilla Hogan.
Bearers were Orlo Olive, Melville Olive, Elmer Olive, Glen Van Houten, Francis Retland and Clarence Russell.
Interment was in Victoria Center cemetery.
