Lewis Henry Ryan, the son of Dennis and Agnes Cotter Ryan, was born August 9, 1908 on a farm in Adams County, Iowa and passed away on Thursday
afternoon, January 5, 1978 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa, after an extended illness, at the age of 69 years, 4 months and 26 days.
On February 1, 1940, he was united in marriage with Joye Dodge at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Corning, Iowa. Six children were born to bless this marriage: Larry, Richard, Douglas, Janice, Judith and Dennis.
Lewis and Joye farmed east of Corning after their marriage until moving to their farm southeast of Massenn in March of 1943.
He is survived by his wife, Joye Ryan of Massena; his sons, Larry and Richard Ryan of Atlantic; Douglas Ryan of Brayton, Iowa; and Dennis Ryan who lives at home; two daughters, Janice Ryan of Des Moines, Iowa and Judith Ryan of Atlantic. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and two brothers, Eddie and Leo Ryan of Lenox, Iowa and a sister, Margaret Sweet of Des Moines, as well as many other relatives and many many friends.
Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Massena January 7 at 10:00 a.m. with Father James Wadsworth officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery at Massena.
Music was furnished by Pearle Spieker, organist, and Marian Amdor, vocalist. Flowerbearers were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Weichman, Mr. and Mrs. Beryl
Swope and Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Brentnall. Ushers were Donald L. Curry and Louis Holste.
Pallbearers were William Moore, Robert Ryan, Robert Haag, Charles Holste, Francis Cullen and Joseph Sweet.
