The funeral service for GAIL ERNEST BURKE, 74, of Anita will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anita, with the Rev. AL SHERBO officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the Mullen Funeral Home in Anita, and a parish wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Mr. Burke, a longtime cattle and hog buyer, died Sunday evening at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.

The son of ERNEST and EFFIE BALLENSIEFER BURKE, he was born in Wiota Dec. 3, 1916. He graduated from the Anita High School in 1934 and attended Creighton University in Omaha and graduated in 1938.

Mr. Burke then entered business with his father in E. Burke and Sons and it later was known as Burke Brothers. The business included cattle and hog buying selling feed and farming.

His marriage to JANET E. SCHAFER took place at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic May 16, 1940, and they lived all of their married life in the same house in Anita.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anita, active member of the Cass County Memorial Hospital board of directors for 30 years, served several years on the Anita School Board and was board president, served on the Anita City Council for several years and was on the Park and Recreation board.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, BARRY BURKE of Lexington, Mass., and his wife, MARY LOU; ALAN BURKE of Hawarden and his wife, RITA; a daughter, SUSAN SMITH of Atlantic and her husband, CRAIG; nine grandchildren, PAUL, KAREN, SEAN ERIN, TOM and MIKE BURKE; MICHELLE and MATTHEW MARTIN and MARC SMITH; a brother RAY BURKE of Omaha and his wife MARJORIE; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lt. KEVIN BURKE; a daughter, SARAH BURKE and his parents.
