WIOTA YOUTH IS ASPHYXIATED BY FUMES FROM CAR

Death of DONALD CLIFFORD HAMANN, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. GUS HAMANN of near Wiota, from asphyxiation by carbon monoxide gas fumes from the exhaust of his car, was characterized as accidental by Dr. W. W. KITSON, Cass county coroner, after the youth’s body was found about 1:30 yesterday afternoon. Apparently the youth had driven onto a roadway between U.S. 6 and the Rock Island railroad in the west outskirts of Anita early Sunday morning to sleep, leaving the heater and motor of his 1934 car running, while en route from the home of Miss ELSIE DINKLA, near Massena, to his home southeast of Wiota.

He had left the Dinkla home about 1:30 Sunday morning and presumably became sleepy, stopping to take a nap before completing the trip to his home. Residents of the west section of Anita noticed the car parked on the road yesterday morning, but did not investigate, nor did PETE ANDERSON of Anita, as he drove past the machine about 9:30 in the morning. Mr. Anderson’s team shied away from the car, its motor still running, and he did not stop, but when he found the car motor still running when he and PAUL KELLEY again passed about 1:30 yesterday afternoon, they stopped and found the dead youth. He had set the brake of the car after pulling to the north side of the road and had slid over to the corner of the left side of the seat.

Kelley went to the J. C. JENKINS home nearby and summoned Dr. Kitson and SHERIFF HARRY JORDAN.

The youth was born on a farm near Wiota Sept. 24, 1924, and was graduated from Wiota high school in 1941. He was a star basketball player at the Wiota School as well as rating high scholastically.

Surviving besides his parents are two sisters, the Misses VERA and MARY ANN, at home; his grandmother, Mrs. AMANDA WYATT, of Lincoln, Neb., and a number of other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Roland, Peacock & Baxter funeral home, the Rev. P. N. MC DERMOTT, pastor of SS. Peter and Paul’s Catholic church officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic cemetery. The body will remain at the family home near Wiota until the hour of the service.
