From the Atlantic News Telegraph, Wed, July 11, 1973, “Martin (Elzie) Matthews Dies This Morning - Martin (Elzie) Matthews 90, resident of the Atlantic Care Center, died at 4:50 this morning at the Cass County memorial Hospital where he had been a patient one day. The son of William Jackson and Nettie Morgan Matthews, he was born Nov. 15, 1882 in Cass County. He lived most of his life in the Atlantic vicinity. Mr. Matthews was married to Etha Lou Misner Sept., 20, 1905 at her parent’s home. She died in 1965. Surviving are a son, Donald (Bus) Matthews of Atlantic; two grandchildren, three great grandchildren; three sisters Mrs. Chris (Winnie) Jorgensen of Fontanelle, Mrs. Irma Jorgensen of Stuart and Mrs. G. E. (Leona) Donahue of Shreveport, La.; and several nieces and nephews, including Glen Holaday who was reared by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Matthews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, a son and a sister and brother. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Roland Funeral Home with Rev. Dean Williams of the First United Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.”
