From the Atlantic News Telegraph, 4-21-43, “Funeral of Mrs. W.J. Matthews to Be Held Friday - Funeral services for Mrs. Nettie M. Matthews, 85, wife of William J. Matthews who died yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the family home, 905 East Sixth Street will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Roland Peacock & Baxter Funeral home. The Rev. H. G. Darling of the Atlantic Church of Christ officiating. The Rev. A. Breeding of the Lewis Methodist church will assist and interment will be in the Edna township cemetery near Reno. The body will at the family home until the hour of the service and the casket will be opened at the cemetery. Mrs. Matthews had been in ill health for several years and bedfast about a week, death resulting from complications incident to old age. She was born Jan 19, 1878 [should be 1858] in Garden grove, Ia., the daughter of Uriah and Harriet Morgan and was married to William J. Matthews in Carthage, Ill., Aug 21, 1879, residing there until moving to Edna Township near Massena in 1889. The couple lived there until moving in 1913 to Atlantic which has been their home since. She was a member of the Atlantic Church of Christ. Surviving besides the husband are five children, M.E. and Fern of Atlantic, Mrs. Erma Jorgensen of Stuart, Mrs. Winnie Jorgensen of Fontanelle and Mrs. Leone Donahoe of Chicago; a brother John Morgan of Atlantic; 20 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two children, Mrs. Ethel Holaday and Willie Matthews and a nephew, Harold E. Morgan. Besides her own family, Mrs. Matthews reared two nephews, Harold E and Herbert Morgan and grandson, Glenn M. Holaday.”
