I searched Iowa marriage records for their children and the 1925 Iowa state census; Various surnames for Elisabeth Bruning are listed. Some online trees show "Lolling"; Others are Lordvis, Klaus, Kloenien, Kloenier and Kloune. I believe that the surnames Kloenien and Kloune are probably pretty close. They also appear to have married in Germany in about 1849 before they emigrated. On Kloune, there is an umlaut marking so it looks more credible than the others.
