REMAKEL REMACKEL

In Response To: 1890 arrival of Barbara Remakel in Breda (Bob Arens)

I just looked in the Breda church and community Centennial books I have, and don't see
either name. (of course, there are no indexes for these books, so it is impossible to say for
sure that the name is not in the book). However the Breda Centennial Books are, of course,
written by the descendants who stayed around the area until the 1970s and 80s, so if this
couple settled elsewhere, it is unlikely they would be included in these Centennial Books.

There could have been information in the Breda Newspaper at the time, but copies of the
Breda paper from that time period are not available. I can't remember if they burned, or
exactly what the story was, but available copies begin about 1911, if I remember right.

If Barbara Remakel had a child there, it is likely recorded in the records of St Bernard's Catholic
Church in Breda, IA. I have not requested look ups from this parish, but have accessed the
records there in person two years ago when I was there for a family reunion. (They go back
to 1880.) I believe, that for a small donation, the church secretary would proably look up
the information, and send it to you. The current pastor is: Father James Smith; I don't know
the address, but Breda is small enough, that just addressing it to him at St Bernard's Church,
Breda, IA, 51436, should get to him.

If you do write, you may want to ask for a xerox copy of the baptism record because
another parish in the area sent me a Baptismal form with the information filled in, which I
think may not have been completely accurate. They couldn't read the handwriting very well,
so put "?" for the name of the baptismal sponsor.

Good luck on your search.
Anita Henning
