Wallace Ferd "Bud" Backhaus, 79, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Manilla Manor Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since 1998. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla. Burial will be at Nishnabotna Cemetery at Manilla. Pastor Brian Sherman of United Church in Manilla will officiate at the services. Casket bearers will be Tod Backhaus, David, Backhaus, Scott Backhaus, Brian Finken, Kevin Finken, Jason Humrich, Steven Marks, Aaron Marks, Daniel Marks, Heather Humrich, Sarah Backhaus and Jamie Backhaus. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the funeral home.

Born Dec. 25, 191, near McLean, in Pierce County, Neb., he was a son of Fritz Carl "Fred" and Wilheimina "Minnie" (Dierks) Backhaus. He grew up on the family farm southwest of McLean and graduated from McLean High School. In 1938 he moved with his family to a farm near Manilla. He farmed with his father and brother. He married Dolores Stoelk on Sept. 12, 1943, at the Lutheran Church in Manilla. He continued to farm with is father and brother, and he and his wife and their children lived on one of three houses on the farm. Following his father's death, Mr. Backhaus purchased the a farm and eventually farmed with his son, Doug. In 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Backhaus moved to Denison for four years before returning to Manilla. He continued to spend much of his time on the farm. In 1992 the Backhauses moved to Arizona to be near their daughter, Barb. Mrs. Backhaus died unexpectedly in 1995, and Mr. Backhaus continued to live in Arizona. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, woodworking and refinishing furniture during his retirement. Mr. Backhaus is survived by four children, Doug Backhaus and his wife, Marilyn, of Manilla, Carolyn and her husband, James Humrich, of Baldwin, Mo., Karen "Kitty" and her husband, Randall Finken, of Omaha, and Barbara and her husband, Dean Marks, of Mesa. Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene and her husband, Mike Klein, of Omaha and Vernella Goetzinger of Defiance. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and a brother, Clarence Backhaus.
