Manning

Funeral services for Virgil Johann Genzen of Manning will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Mr. Genzen, 89, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning. Rev. Daniel Vogel will officiate and burial will be at Manning Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Kent Vollstedt, Keith Vollstedt, Bary Keinast, Robert Genzen, Michael Jacobsen and Daniel Grove. Honorary casket bearers will be granddaughters Karen Kienast, Kathy Vollstedt, Janet Smith, Paula Wulf, Barbara Grove and Judith Jacobsen. Visitation is from 4 to 8 tonight at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning. A son of Albert and Bertha (Grimm) Genzen, he was born Jan. 21, 1913, at Haverhill in Marshall county, Iowa. The Genzens moved to a Manning farm in 1916 and he attended rural schools before graduating from Manning High School in 1930. He and Florence Elfieda Hinz were married Oct. 16, 1935, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clarinda. The Genzens farmed northeast of Manning until fall 1983, when they retired and moved into Manning. Mr. Genzen moved to Manning Plaza in October 1998. He was a member of Zion Lutheran church and enjoyed bowling and playing cards. Survivors include his wife Florence of Manning; two children and their spouses, Larry and Cynthia Genzen of Manning and Darlene and Dale Vollstedt of Manning; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; three sisters, Odessa Vinke, LaVonne Gehlsen and her husband, Louie, and Lucille Pfannkuch and her husband, Kenneth, all of Manning; and two sisters-in-law, Irene Genzen of Manilla and Donna Genzen of Bloomington, Ill. Mr. Genzen was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Elmer Genzen, Arthur Genzen, Lester Genzen and his wife, Irene, Ivan Genzen and Robert Genzen; and a brother-in-law, Delbert Vinke.
