Manning – Elroy J. Schrum, 65, died Saturday, July 31, at Manning General Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past six months.

Services will be Tuesday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. John Cornish officiating. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post No. 22. A masonic memorial service will be held tonight at 8:30 at Ohde Funeral Home. Active casket bearers will be Clarus Heithoff, Gene Schatz, Steve McCullum, Herb Bruh, Alvan Hansen and Ray Pratt. Honorary casket bearers will be Eddie Johnson, H. J. Kienapfel, Malick Foley, Jim Alberts, Vern Tiefenthaler and Walt Lage. Organist will be Joann Karsten. Vocalist will be Helen Ohde.

Mr. Schrum is survived by his wife, Darlene; daughters Mrs. Keith (Sharon) Kelderman, Manning; Mrs. Dave (Sue) Rauch, Broken Arrow, Okla., Mrs. Dale (Sandy) Moeller, Leon, and Sheila Schrum, Des Moines; sons, Stan Schrum, Clevelenad, Ohio; Steve Schrum, Nevada, and Skipp Schrum, Denison; 11 grandchildren; brothers, Carl Schrum, Manning and Delmas Schrum, Atlantic, and a sister Mrs. Vern (Helen) Tiefenthaler of Halbur.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Schrum was born May 5, 1917, near Manning, a son of John and Emma Heesch Schrum. He graduated from Manning High School in 1935. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Force as a staff sergeant. He married Darlene Boeck on Jan. 19, 1941, and they lived in Manning where he was employed by Dultmeiers’. He then operated a service station for several years. He became a part-time city mail carrier for the U. S. Post Office in Manning,, and he retired three years ago.

Mr. Schrum was an active member of the Manning American Legion, and was a past commander. He was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association and Masonic Lodge No. 450 in Manning.
