Manning- Andrew N. Leinen, 83, died early Sunday morning, Nov. 17, 1991, at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. The rite of Christian burial will be Thursday, Nov. 21, 1991, at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Manning. Celebrant will be the Rev. Ralph Reinhart. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Manning. Casket bearers will be his grandchildren Lynn Phillips, Lisa Rohe, Dean Peoppe, Becky Zinke, Kim Smith and Andrew Leinen. Honorary casket bearers will be Louie Hargens, Ray Ehlers, Stan Ewoldt, Bill Otto, Louie Muhlbauer and Arlo Dammann. Visitation will begin on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning. Rosary will be recited on Wednesday at 4 p.m. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday followed by a rosary.

Mr. Leinen was born Feb. 18, 1908, at Portsmouth, Iowa, a son of Peter M. and Ann (Ohlinger) Leinen. He attended parochial schools in Portsmouth. As a youth, he was an accomplished baseball player and was a catcher on a St. Louis farm team until 1937. On his birthday, Feb. 18, 1930, he married Leone Schwery. That year he began farming near Portsmouth. In those years he was nicknamed "Brodie" or "Derby." In 1939, he and his family moved to a farm in the Botna and Manning area. In 1969, they moved to Spencer, returning to Manning in 1989, they became residents of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in 1990. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning.

Survivors include his wife, Leone, of Manning; his children: Dale Leinen and his wife, Cathie, of Anchorage, Alaska, Ethel and her husband, Loren Poeppe, of Torrington, Wyo., Audrey and her husband, Robert Phillips, of Manning; Alan Leinen and his wife, Alma, of Omaha, Neb., and Doris and her husband, Robert Sembach, of Spencer; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and the following brothers and sisters: Dett Green of Spencer, Ann Rattenborg of Fargo, N. D., Margaret Mester of Los Angeles, Calf., Zeno Leinen of Portsmouth, Francis Leinen of Earling, Iowa, and Clara Petersen of Harlan, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three grandsons, Melvin Leinen, Todd Phillips and Adam Semback; a granddaughter, Leone Mae Leinen; and the following brothers and sisters: Herman Leinen, Joseph Leinen, Rose Raymond, Eva Gubbels, Martha Reinig, Melania Goetzinger, and Laura Reid; and the following half-brothers and sisters: Nick Leinen, Constance Leinen, Peter Leinen, Michael D. Leinen, Lena Schumacher, Sister Mary Leinen and Catherine Leinen.
