Manning- Darrell Bales, 79, of Carroll, died Saturday, March 2, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. He spent his entire business life in food promotion and management in Coon Rapids, Carroll, Audubon and Manilla. At one time he owned and operated a grocery store in Manning. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 5 at First Presbyterian church in Manning with the Rev. Arthur Bell of Carroll officiating. Connie Siepker will be organist and Judy Joens vocalist. Burial will be in the Manning cemetery. Serving as active casket bearers will be Harold Olson, Marvin Wieman, John Blom, Owen Ramsey, Henry Sonksen and Carol Vennink. Honorary bearers will be Harry Bayer, Ray Wessling, Donald Blom, Herman Leiting and Harvey Christensen. Mr. Bales is survived by his wife Evelyn, Carroll; a son Jack Bales and his wife Julie, Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother Herschelle Bales and his wife Martha, Adel; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Gerald and a sister Hazel in infancy. Mr. Bales was born at Van Meter, Iowa, on June 5, 1905, a son of Walter and Margaret Crawford Bales. He moved with his family to Bagley where he graduated from Bagley High School in 1924. He attended American Institute of Business at Des Moines. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, Gold Leaf Lodge No. 592, A. F. & A. M. at Manilla, and the Mariners Club of the Presbyterian church. Friends may call at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning any time Monday.
