Funeral service for Elvera Lorraine Bohnsack Gardels of Carroll will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll.

Mrs. Gardels, 88, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008 at Carroll Health Center of complications from a stroke.

The Rev. David Anthony will officiate the service. Organist will be Jan Hoff.

Casket bearers will be Alan Loots, Jim Gardels, Chance Thelen and Clint Schmidt.

Burial will be in Carroll Cemetery.

Visitation started at 5 this afternoon and a prayer service will be held at 7 tonight at Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll.

Online condolences can be left at dahnandwoodhouse.com. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Paul Lutheran Church or St. Anthony Hospice in lieu of flowers.

A daughter of John Frederick and Anna (Hansen) Bohnsack, she was born Aug. 21, 1919, near Aspinwall. After her father died in 1930 she moved from Manning to Carroll with her mother and three younger sisters. Her mother then married Ernest Lee Toyne, who helped raise her. She was confirmed March 25, 1934, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church by Pastor Albert J. Mueller. She graduated from Carroll High School in 1939 and from Madam Kennedy's Beauty School in 1941.

She and Ramon Arthur "Jack" Gardels were married Sept. 28, 1942, at First Lutheran Church in Omaha, Neb. Mr. Gardels was a musician from West Point, Neb., who played the saxophone. They had a son and settled in Carroll.

After working for other beauty operators, Mrs. Gardels opened Kut and Kurl beauty salon Dec. 26, 1956, at her home on Salinger Avenue. She retired Jan. 19, 2001, after 44 years.

She moved to Carroll Health Center in March 2007.

Mrs. Gardels was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, a longtime volunteer at Carroll Health Center and the New Hope Village Store and historian for the Carroll High School Alumni and Friends Association for many years. She enjoyed fashion, jazz and swing music and many arts and crafts, including knitting, photography and home decoration.

Survivors include a son, Dean Gardels, and his wife, Andrea, of Marydel, Md.; two grandsons: James Gardels and wife Brenda of Marydel, Del., and Jason Gardels, of Dover, Del.; a great-grandson; two sisters: Maureen Loots of Des Moines and Lavilla Taylor of Las Vegas, Neb.; and a sister-in-law Violetta Soll, of Sun City, Ariz.

Mrs. Gardels was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack, on Jan. 28, 1976; a sister, Geraldine Moorman, on May 2, 1985; and two step-brothers: Gilbert and Glenn Toyne.
