Manning, IowaLeman Carl, son of Emil Cleveland and Ella (Wegner) Ehlers, was born November 30, 1914, at the family farm southwest of Manning in Crawford County, Iowa. He grew up on that farm with his parents and his younger brothers Kenneth and Raymond. Leman attended country school and then graduated from Manning High School in 1932. Leman farmed with his father and they also did custom corn shelling in a wide area around Manning.
Leman entered the Army Air Corps in 1942 and was stationed in Florida where he was a Link Trainer Operator, helping train pilots on a simulator. After his honorable discharge in 1945, he returned to his home area.
On March 3, 1946, Leman was united in marriage with Mildred Ann Bender at Sioux City. One son was born to this union. They started farming east of Manilla in 1948. In 1974 their son rejoined them on the farm following his college graduation. After Leman retired from active farming in 1980 they remained on the farm. In 1985, Leman and Mildred moved to a home in Manning they had purchased and redecorated the year before. When Mildred's health began to fail she entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home and died there several years later in 2003.
Leman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manning where he served on the Board of Trustees. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion. After his retirement he continued to help his son on the farm. Leman enjoyed repair and mechanical work on the farm over the years. Later in life he read a lot on investing and health topics.
Leman entered the Manning Plaza in 2002 and he died there on Friday, January 16, 2009, at the age of 94 years, 1 month and 17 days.
Preceding Leman in death are his wife; parents; two brothers Raymond Ehlers and Kenneth Ehlers and his wife Pauline.
He is survived by his son Ronnie Lee Ehlers of Manilla; sisters-in-law Phyllis Ehlers of Manning and Eula Bender of Carroll; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. ~ The Ohde Funeral Home, Manning IA
