I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. The obituary was originally published on Friday, 17 July 1891. I have not changed the name or place spellings. Any information in brackets or notes at the end is my own explanation. It reads as follows:
Martin Ludwig
Martin Ludwig died Saturday afternoon at 5:00 at the advanced age of 73, having received Last Rights and surrendered to the will of God. The deceased was highly esteemed and well-liked by all who knew him, and that is why so many friends and acquaintances from Breda, Mt. Carmel, and the vicinity came here to pay their final respects. He was born in 1817 on the Mosel River in Germany. He married Miss Anna Faucht in 1845. He moved to the United States in 1861 and settled in Jo Daves [should be Daviess] County, Illinois. In 1869, he moved to Carroll County and purchased land in Kniest Township, where he lived happily and peacefully in the twilight years of his life, with the exception of the last, which he spent in the town of Carroll. In his younger years, he ensured that he would have a carefree old age, and the well-being of his children adorned his later years. This true Christian marriage was blessed with 11 children, nine of whom are still living: James, Henry, Frank, Charley, Christ, Joseph, Annie, Josephine, and Victoria, now Mrs. Schelle. Our deepest sympathy to the bereaved. May he rest in peace.
NOTES: Carroll cemetery records state, Martin Ludwig 28 August 1818-11 July 1891.
