I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. The obituary was originally published on Friday, 12 February 1909. I have not changed the name or place spellings. Any information in brackets or notes at the end is my own explanation. It reads as follows:
Mathias Evets
On Wednesday morning, Mathias Evets died here at his home in the Fourth Ward, as a result of stomach cancer.
The deceased was born in Austria and was 76 years old. He immigrated to America many years ago and settled first in Clinton County, Iowa, where he practiced agriculture. Later, he moved to Shelby County, and then to Carroll County, where he had lived since then. He married in 1864.
Mathias Evets was a hard-working and frugal man who achieved great prosperity. He was a respectable citizen and a good husband. He was always a healthy and strong man, but during the last years he became very ill. He had an operation shortly after New Year, whereby it was discovered that he suffered from stomach cancer. His condition then worsened quickly, until he finally passed away on Wednesday morning.
He is survived by his wife and two adopted children, as well as two sisters and a brother.
