Nov 23, 1922 - Carroll Times - John Conway, 62 years old, former city marshal of Carroll, former member of the fire dapertment, and a resident of this city 33 years, died in the St. Anthony hospital yesterday morning after an illness of about 18 months. He was one of the most highly respected citizens of Carroll and his death, although not entirely unexpected, came as a distinct shock to his many friends. The cause of his death is given as pernicious anemia.

John Conway, jr. was shot and killed while serving for his father as city marshal more than a year ago, and the man charged with the crime was acquitted. It is believed that Mr. Conway's death was largely due to the tragic death of his son and to the nervous strain brought about by the trial of his alleged murderer.

Mr. Conway seldom, if ever, complained about his illness. In fact, he endeavored to make himself and his friends believe that he was not seriously ill, and when asked about his condition would usually reply: "Oh, I am feeling all right. I can eat a full meal and am taking things easy."

However, members of the family knew that each day for months his health was gradually failing. Friday afternoon his condition became serious. Monday he entered the hospital where he passed away Wednesday morning into the last quiet, dreamless slumber.

Mr. Conway came to Carroll 33 years ago, establishing a transfer line in this city. Always good natured and a hard worker he built up a business which is now in charge of his son, Henry Conway. Mr. Conway was a great lover of horses and was one of the last men in the transfer business to have them replaced by the auto truck. It is said of him that he never sold a horse when it had outlived its usefulness in his business but cared for it conscientiously as long as the animal lived. He was a member of the Carroll fire department and twice served as city marshal, both times in a very satisfactory manner.

Mr. Conway was born in Jackson county, Ia., in 1860. He was married to Miss Catherine Reynolds 37 years ago, who, with four children survive. The children are: Henry, Elvena, Oracle, and Marie. Freddie, the oldest child, died at the age of four years, and John died a year and a half ago, at the age of 25. He also is survived by two brothers, Patrick Conway, of Minneapolis, and Richard Conway, of Oklahoma. His brother, Patrick Conway, came several days ago and was with him during the last days of his life.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9 o'clock at the St Joseph church. The pall bearers will be Edward Killeen, Mike Killeen, Joe Wall, P.J. Hamill, H.V. Janssen and R.J. Hamill.
